Workouts You Can Do at a Beach

Workouts You Can Do at a Beach

Does your time on a beach increase in July? The large public lake and sound beaches, or a hidden street-end beach? Perhaps you get yourself out to an honest ocean beach this summer. I’d reckon for you Seattle folks a 20 minute drive, ride or walk would likely reach one of these beach gems: Alki, Golden Gardens, Matthews, Madrona, or Mt Baker.

Don’t love the gym? Rachel meets clients at home, in their yards or at a park. She specializes in outdoor fitness and will design creative workouts that build your fitness in settings you love—no gym required. Get in touch for a free consultation by emailing her at rachel@unstilllife.com.

Core to the Unstill Life sensibility is bringing your exertion outside, enjoying the metro-natural qualities of parks and environment while looking for the unique affordances they present for movement. Beaches are especially cool places to explore and exercise due to their sandy, woody and rocky surfaces. They allow you to build strength, mobility and agility while taking in the lovely surroundings.

Sand is inherently unstable. The way it moves under your feet makes it exquisitely harder to move through than a firm unyielding surface. So any movement you do – voi-lá: more intense and challenging.

Rocks provide interesting organic elements to climb, scramble and balance upon. A pair of rocks can serve as weights to add resistance to squats, deadlifts, overhead presses (careful!)

Logs that have made their way onto beaches present surfaces for stepping up to, or an incline to place your hands on for push ups or your shoulders on for hip extensions.

Try this simple powerful workout on your next beach outing.

  • Walking Lunges in sand
  • Push ups in sand or with hands on a log or boulder
  • Squats holding a rock
  • Jumping Jacks in sand
  • Overhead presses with a rock or two
  • Balance on one leg tossing a rock or stick from hand to hand
  • Cap the set with a short sprint or swim
  • REPEAT 2-3 rounds

Obviously, be aware of your surroundings and don’t do anything stupid. We all take risks being outside, but the upside is exhilarating to body and spirit. So look after yourselves. See you at the beach!
