What Are Unstill Life Outdoor Workouts Like?
With Visitors’ Days afoot Mar 4th – 15th, you may be wondering, what is the dang deal with these outdoor workouts?
In a single sentence…We do an ever-varying mix of strength and stamina exercises outside in small groups of fun folks.
The slightly longer executive summary… We do a 10 minute warm up, which is always the same so you can get to know it and use it anytime you need a movement snack. Then, I explain the day’s format, demonstrate exercises and give options and modifications for anyone wanting to make it harder, easier or different. A set will usually go for 7-12 minutes, and include a combination of strength exercises, agility, cardio and balance. When the set is done, we take a two minute walk/run/stretch break. Then we do a new set. We finish with a short stretch and deep breathing cool down and a very important declaration: You are exercised!
And for even more detail, the Ten Things we love about Unstill Life Workouts…
Full-body – each class includes multi-joint exercises, upper and lower body.
Core galore – it’s integrated into all workouts. Possibly some core exercises you’ve never done before.
Cardio – we always have some, with lots of options to choose from. Running is optional.
Functional – for life (carrying awkward loads, dynamic balance, producing power) and for outdoor recreation (run, bike, swim, hike, kayak, ski, and so on)
Intensity adjustable – you can take these workouts into the HIT zone, or keep them more moderate.
Variety – it’s different every time. We routinely use body weight and dumbbells (5 – 15 depending on the exercise), but sometimes incorporate other equipment such as: resistance bands, medicine balls, kettlebells, bosu, agility ladder, playground equipment.
Highly modifiable – for fitness level, energy level you show up with, and to work around injury and tweaky areas.
Challenge by choice – you can always do you, whatever that is on a given day. If you don’t have a hard push in you, just come and stretch.
Game-like & social – while we rarely get competitive, there’s often a task, a time-frame and something interactively fun about the format.
Environment-informed – In park settings and sometimes using the features (ledges, stairs, benches, railings, playground equipment, etc)
And the people you’ll meet are…
Warm and welcoming
Multigenerational – we’ve got folks in their 20s-40s, and are also home for those in their 50-80s. That’s part of the magic–it’s something we love about our gang.
Fun-loving and curious – reading, watching and doing interesting things.
And they enjoy being outside – and love sharing ideas and resources for outdoor recreation.
So, how about it? Are you ready to be declared exercised?
