Morning Stretches To Start Your Day Out Right
Starting your day on the right foot⎯literally, can make all the difference in how productive, focused, and positive you feel. One incredibly simple yet effective way to achieve this is through a series of morning stretches. Stretching not only helps you wake up your body, but also sets the tone for the day with a calm and energized mindset.
This blog will take you through the benefits of morning stretching, provide a step-by-step guide to a simple routine, and explain how just a few minutes of movement can improve your overall well-being.
What Are The Benefits of Stretching in The Morning?
Adding even just 5–10 minutes of stretching to your morning routine makes a huge difference for your overall health. “Stretching keeps the muscles flexible and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints.” Without muscle flexibility, they can shorten and become tight, which can cause joint pain, strains, and muscle damage.
Improved Flexibility & Mobility
During sleep, your muscles and joints can become stiff from staying in the same position for hours. Morning stretches can help loosen up your body, improve flexibility, and increase your range of motion. This keeps you limber and helps prevent future injuries.
Reduced Stress & Tension
Stress and muscle tension often go hand in hand. Stretching acts as a gentle release for tight muscles, which can help lower stress levels. Take a deep breath as you stretch so you can benefit from the calming effect of connecting movement with your breath.
Improved Posture
If you’re someone who spends long hours sitting at a desk, morning stretches can help realign your posture by loosening tight muscles in your neck, shoulders, and lower back. This way, you’re less likely to slouch.
Take A Moment for Yourself
Stretching is more than just a physical activity, but also an opportunity to slow down, focus on yourself, and set your intentions for the day ahead. It provides a moment to be present, leaving you centered and ready to take on the day.
A Simple Morning Stretch Routine to Try
No matter your fitness level, this morning stretch routine is easy to follow and requires no equipment. People often ask about static stretches vs dynamic stretches and when each is appropriate. As a general rule, for warm up, dynamic stretches are more effective. Static stretches are better after an activity. This routine has a little of both. Where you can, explore adding gentle dynamic movement within each stretch. Spend about 15–30 seconds (or 2-4 breaths) on each side, breathing into your belly, and do several repetitions (5-6) of each stretch.
If a stretch feels really intense, back off slightly. Sometimes muscles hold on more if they are in an extreme stretch. Experiment with backing off and then see if you can find a little more length in the stretching muscles.
1. Cat-Cow Stretch
The cat-cow stretch releases tension in the spine, neck, and shoulders, which often feel stiff after sleeping.
How to do it:
- Start on your hands and knees in a tabletop position with your wrists under your shoulders and knees under your hips.
- Begin by inhaling as you arch your back, letting your belly drop toward the floor (cow pose).
- Exhale as you round your back toward the ceiling while tucking your chin to your chest (cat pose).
- Flow gently back and forth between the two poses 5–6 times.
2. Standing Forward Fold and Sway
This stretch reduces tightness in the hamstrings and promotes relaxation in the lower back.
How to do it:
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
- Slowly hinge forward from the hips, bending over until your hands reach your feet or the floor (bend your knees if needed).
- Relax your head and neck to feel the stretch along the backs of your legs. Gently sway side to side in the forward fold position, taking hold of one leg, then the other.
3. Seated Side Stretch
Side stretches release tension in your obliques and shoulders and improve flexibility in your torso.
How to do it:
- Sit cross-legged on the floor or on the edge of a chair.
- Extend one arm overhead, reaching toward the opposite side of your body.
- Place the other hand on the floor, clasp the seat of the chair or your leg for support.
- Hold for a few seconds, then slowly switch sides. Taking a breath or two on each side, flow back and forth 5-6 times.
4. Spinal Twist
Twisting realigns your spine and counters hip stiffness, especially if you’ve slept in a wrong position. This stretch works better as a static rather than dynamic stretch.
How to do it:
- Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you.
- Bend one knee and cross that leg over the other, placing the foot flat on the ground on the other side of the outstretched leg.
- Hug your knee toward your chest gently twist your torso to the side.
- Hold for a few slow breaths, then switch sides.

5. Child’s Pose
A child’s pose is a great stretch for your lower back, hips, and thighs
How to do it:
- Kneel on the floor and sit your hips back onto your heels. If this is a difficult position for you, try stacking pillows under your hips or behind your knees to create some elevation.
- Stretch your arms out in front of you while lowering your forehead to the ground.
- Sink deep into the pose, breathing deeply. Find gentle dynamic movement by walking the hands side to side.
6. Neck Rolls
Neck rolls relieve tightness in your neck and shoulders and are especially beneficial if you tend to sleep in awkward positions.
How to do it:
- Sit or stand with a tall spine.
- Drop your head to one side, then slowly roll it forward and over to the other side.
- Continue by exploring the largest circle you can make in all directions, going about 5-6 circles, then reverse direction.
Stay Consistent With Morning Stretches
To get the most out of morning stretching, consistency is key. Even if you only have a couple of minutes in the morning, just this short amount of time can make a noticeable difference in how your body feels. Keep a yoga mat by your bed as a reminder to do your stretches in the morning. Give these stretches a try tomorrow morning, and see how much better you feel!
